Why Open a Business Bank Account in the Netherlands?

A business account keeps your company’s finances separate from your personal money. It also makes everyday admin easier, especially when you need to:

  • Simplify bookkeeping and tax admin. Your accountant can work from a clear record of business transactions.
  • Make and receive payments. Use the account to get paid by customers and pay suppliers, salaries, taxes and other bills.
  • Use a business IBAN. Add your account details to invoices and use them for payments related to your company.
  • Access business features. Depending on the provider, you may get business cards, invoicing tools, accounting connections and other payment features.

Which Documents Do You Need to Open a Business Bank Account?

The application starts with your company and personal details, followed by document checks before the account is approved. These initial steps are generally similar across providers when opening a business account in the Netherlands.

As for the specific documents, what you need to provide depends on the bank and your company’s legal form. Most applications ask for some combination of:

  • passport or another accepted form of ID
  • KVK registration or Business Register extract
  • company address and, where required, proof of address
  • details of directors, shareholders and UBOs
  • articles of association and other company documents, where relevant
  • partnership agreement for some partnership structures
  • details of your business activities and how you expect to use the account

The bank may also ask for extra documents as part of its KYC and AML checks.

What else do foreign founders need to open a business account?

Foreign founders may face a few extra checks, depending on the bank. These can relate to your connection to the Netherlands and how your business operates across countries. For example, a bank may:

  • ask why you need a Dutch business account if you live abroad
  • ask in which countries your business operates or makes transactions
  • ask for more information about international customers and suppliers
  • carry out extra checks if your business has owners or directors in several countries

These aren’t universal requirements. Banks have their own policies, and some are considerably more open to non-residents and international founders than others.

Traditional Banks vs Neobanks: Which Is Better for Foreign Founders?

Both options are available to businesses in the Netherlands, but there are some differences in how they work.

With traditional banks, you’ll usually get access to more business banking services and products. Applications tend to involve more checks, particularly if you live outside the Netherlands or run an international business. Traditional banks are also more likely to have physical branches, which you can use if you prefer to deal with some matters in person.

Neobank applications and day-to-day account management are usually handled online. Non-resident requirements vary between providers. Some neobanks accept founders who live elsewhere in the EEA, which can make them more accessible in certain situations. They also tend to offer more app-based features, such as instant payment notifications and virtual cards.

What to Look for When Choosing a Business Bank Account

For a foreign founder, a few details matter more than the starting price:

  • the provider’s rules for your legal form and country of residence
  • monthly costs plus charges for transfers, cards, cash and currency exchange
  • supported currencies, transfer costs and exchange rates
  • which country the IBAN comes from and whether it suits your business needs
  • available integrations with accounting software you already use
  • the number of cards and users included in the plan, plus the cost of additional cards or users
  • deposit and withdrawal options, especially if your business handles cash
  • available contact methods and support languages

A note on prices: the starting price is useful, but it’s not the full picture if your business makes a lot of payments. A free account may still have extra charges, so look at all possible costs when comparing fees for business accounts in the Netherlands. The total will depend on how often you use the account and which features you need.

FAQ

Is a business bank account mandatory in the Netherlands?

Not always. A sole trader can use a personal account, although a separate one makes it easier to keep business and personal finances apart. As for limited companies, a bv is a separate legal entity, so the business needs its own finances and account.

How long does it take to open a business bank account in the Netherlands?

Some banks let you apply online in just a few minutes. They’ll check the information you provide and might come back for additional documents. If you’re a foreign founder, this part can take longer since the bank has more information to check.

Can a non-resident open a business bank account in the Netherlands?

Yes, although the bank may ask for more paperwork. Expect to provide your ID, address, and business details as well as information about the company’s owners and directors. The exact list depends on the bank.
