FAQ

  • What is a business account with an Italian IBAN?

It is a current account dedicated to the activities of a company or a professional, opened with a regulated intermediary in Italy and identified by an IBAN starting with the prefix “IT.” It is used for collections, payments, and national tax obligations – F24 (Italian unified tax payment form), INPS (Istituto Nazionale della Previdenza Sociale – Italian Social Security Institute), etc.
  • Can self-employed professionals under the flat-rate tax regime (‘forfettario’) use a personal account, or is a business account required?

With a ‘forfettario’ (flat-rate regime), there is no legal obligation to open a “business” current account: self-employed professionals can manage their income and expenses using a personal account. Why, then, do many consultants still recommend it?
    • Clear separation between personal and professional expenses → “clean” account statements in case of tax audits or bank queries.
    • Faster reconciliation with e-invoicing and accounting software.
    • Access to services designed for Partita IVA holders (Self-employed professionals, Sole Proprietors, and Companies) – business cards, F24 payments, and e-invoicing software integration.
In summary, you can continue using your personal account, but opening a dedicated one (even online and with zero fees) remains a best practice for financial management and reduces risks in case of tax checks or future business growth.
  • How does Finom protect the money deposited in the business account with an Italian IBAN?

    1. Segregated funds in a Safeguarding Foundation

Customer funds are not held in Finom’s own accounts: they are transferred to a separate Safeguarding Foundation established by Finom Payments B.V. and supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). This ensures that the funds are legally separated from the company’s assets and cannot be accessed by its creditors.

    2. Custody with top-tier partner banks

The Foundation deposits the funds in dedicated accounts held with solid European institutions, such as BNP Paribas. Even in the unlikely event of the insolvency of either Finom or the partner bank, the safeguarded funds would remain protected and would be returned under the supervision of the DNB.

    3. “Unlimited” protection (not subject to the €100,000 limit)

Since these are safeguarded e-money funds, protection is not based on the typical €100,000 Deposit Guarantee Scheme, but on a safeguarding regime that covers 100% of balances, with no upper limit.

    4. Additional technical measures

Passkey and 3-D Secure authentication, GDPR-compliant EU servers, and enhanced AML/KYC checks further strengthen operational protection against fraud and unauthorized access.
  • Is a foreign entity with a branch in Italy required to have a business account with an Italian IBAN?

From a strictly legal point of view, no: neither the Italian Civil Code nor the TUB (Testo Unico Bancario, Consolidated Banking Act) requires branches (permanent establishments) of foreign companies to open a current account with an “IT” IBAN. The European Union prohibits “IBAN discrimination,” meaning that, in theory, the Public Administration cannot refuse payments made from a non-Italian SEPA IBAN. However, in practice, it becomes almost essential. While the law does not formally require an Italian IBAN, the day-to-day management of a branch (capital operations, F24 tax payments, direct debits, and reimbursements) makes it practically indispensable to have a business account with an authorized institution established in Italy. Recommended best practice:
    1. Open a business account with a bank or supervised financial intermediary based in Italy (for example, the Italian branch of a foreign group or a fintech such as Finom): the IBAN will still have the “IT” prefix.
    2. Use any foreign account only for international treasury operations, declaring it annually in the RW section of the Italian tax return and paying the IVAFE (foreign financial assets tax) if applicable.
    3. Check that the chosen bank appears in the F24 telematic list published by the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency): this is the technical requirement for paying taxes and contributions directly, without intermediaries.
